For many years the iconic figure of ‘SGT Dan’ was the trademark of Creamoata, a porridge manufactured and distributed from Gore by the entrepreneurial Fleming family. The Flemings built a large and impressive processing plant on a Gorton Street site for several reasons. One of these was its proximity to the main South Island railway line - the Flemings had their own spur that is still there today.
